Concrete Jungle | Urban Botanical 30th Birthday

Taya Paparone - Wednesday, October 05, 2016

I go on quite a bit about blank canvasses when it comes to venues. It can be a challenge to work around a venue that has too much existing style, even when that style is appealing. When Candice approached me about her husband’s surprise 30
th birthday at Hylin, our main goal was to ensure we picked up the existing aesthetic of the space while spinning it into something that would appeal to Graham.

The industrial look function room adjacent to the main café is an indoor garden of beautiful and well-loved greenery but retains Hylin’s signature clean urban lines and vibrant mural artwork. Candice was keen to incorporate cement into the brief so I developed a palette that would speak to cool, stony tones and added little lashings of black lifted by glowing natural wood and candlelight.

Minimal and elegantly urban menus and placecards by That Girl Boo were provided by caterer Major & Morsel Food Co. Bountiful cheese share plates, sticky and glorious pork belly and a plethora of decadent desserts were just some of the amazing menu items we were lucky enough to see the M & M ladies create.

For the tablescape we matched striking black wine glassware with a very slightly tinted green water tumbler and let a loose dove grey linen runner fall in an organised mess down the centre of Hylin’s long timber table. Florals were sparse and delicate to offset the masculine aesthetic and add texture and depth. Cement candles and loose foliage lined the window sill where we also displayed Savour The Date’s super sleek concrete cake, brushed lightly in gold and sporting a decadent gold chocolate sail.

Balloons By Beth provided a standout feature in giant black foil numbers to mark the year of Graham’s birth – 1986. Candice herself planned a suite of games for her guests to enjoy and personalised a Skittles based Q&A that had everyone roaring with laughter. After dark the room was a buzzing haven of happiness and candlelight and it was evident that our style and Hylin’s were a match made in concrete heaven.

Big shout out to Partaya interns Vanessa Nguyen from The Aesthetic Collective and Stav Balomenos who were quick off the mark, impressive in their creativity and tireless in their work ethic. You'll be seeing more of these ladies on the event styling scene soon.
